The Common App Personal Statement is your opportunity to demonstrate who you are in the most personal terms; It’s the only piece of the application that comes straight from you! Picture your college admissions rep: They’re exhausted. They’ve looked at hundreds if not thousands of applications. They’ve poured over your grades, your test scores, your academic record, your recommendation letters. Up until now, they’ve read a hundred applications exactly like yours. The personal statement is your chance to leap off the page and touch their heart with your story in your words.

The first question we’re asked every year is, indisputably, “How important is the essay?” The weight of the essay on your application can range from 10-30% depending on the institution. They tend to matter more for small schools or schools that look at applications holistically. Essays matter most when it comes to differentiating you from students with similar academic profiles – it can be the tie-breaker!

The personal statement gives you the opportunity to present personal information not found anywhere else in the application. The college admissions rep wants to know: Who is this student? Will this student contribute to our campus? Can this student write? While each school has its own criteria and different readers will prefer and value different elements, all schools want to read a good story and learn about you.

Now don’t worry! You don’t need to be the next Shakespeare to write an excellent essay! In fact, some of the best essays we receive all year come from engineers, future doctors, students whose first language is not English, and students who have otherwise struggled with writing. That’s because this isn’t so much an essay you’d write for school; We’re not looking for you to cite your sources, dissect poetry line by line, or convince us that the green light in The Great Gatsby is actually a symbol for Gatsby’s hopes and dreams.

Think of the Personal Statement as a chance to have a conversation with your admissions rep. Your only obligation is to use your own words and to write in your own authentic voice to tell us what’s important to you. Our program is dedicated to helping you reflect on your experiences so you can tell your story in a way that only you ever could. We’re just here to support you however we can!
